Someone with more knowledge about headphone wiring can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe most headphones that use this type of dual entry system only wire the tip and the sleeve of the connector on the headphone entry side. If the cables were wired that way AND the headphone female port was wired to expect that, the L & R should be interchangeable, the channels would just switch sides, but in this case they're not.Download QuickTime Player 7 for Mac OS X v10.6.3 QuickTime Player 7 supports older media formats, such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime movies, and MIDI files. My guess is that it was their lame attempt at trying to make the cable proprietary. This would also ensure that the headphone would not work at all for anyone who accidentally or knowingly tried to plug a normal stereo AUX cord into only ONE cup (like the X2).So I guess their logic does sorta make sense in a stupid kind of way.Assuming I’m right, this means that ALL 3rd party cables will have to be custom wired for the X3, or at least a cable will have to have the ends cut off and resoldered to be compatible.I don’t know if or when I’ll ever get the X3, but if I ever do, the first thing I’ll be modding is reconfiguring the female sockets in the earcups themselves to be ‘normal’ (assuming I’m right on the goofy proprietary wiring).I will do a proper comparison between other headphones in time, but I want to point out again how similar they are in tonality to the HD650s.So easy on the ears, very natural and gentle flowing. The width of the X3's is mostly the same as the HD650s, but with some recordings instruments escape out of their confined space and give you a sudden hint of a much bigger picture. So maybe the cable is wired as one channel to each earcup, but they still do L to the tip and R to the ring? Maybe the earcups are wired to accept TRS connectors so it could have been reversible like the LCD-1 but they didn't bother to wire the cable that way so it could actually work?Or maybe Mink's headphones are defective and all of this speculation is based on a pair that's not constructed correctly.Based on what you all are describing, I’m certain this is most likely what Philips is doing with the wiring:This is the only explanation as to why the cable only works when L/R is plugged in properly, but doesn’t work at all when L/R are reversed. It’s a stupid idea. This is how the Audeze LCD-1 is designed.Based on what Mink's saying, neither of these scenarios is true with the X3. My passport wd for mac formatNo steeliness, no ringing, no sharp peaks, just at times a very slight resonating textured thingy, an artifact that is seperated from the full treble tone.To my ears very similar to the HD650s. The X3s highs are smooth and non fatiguing, but still a bit uneven and not always without grain, a tiny bit of grain I must emphasize. The X3s are very close in timbre and naturalness in tone as the HD650s, but, this becomes an annoying cliche, in the higher frequencies the HD650 are unbeaten. In an earlier post I stated that technically the X3s are in the same league as the ATH-A900Xs, I no longer stand behind this. But mainly because the stereo image isn't that extremely panned between left and right, but rather evenly filled out and rounded. The HD650 are more articulate, not exactly with an emphasize, but you generally get more texture and micro details.Very good on the X3s. Definitely warmer than Beoplay H6s, AKG K550 MKIIs and Denon D5000s.Not the most dynamic sounding. Still the sound isn't without warmth. From bass to lower mids it sound very linear, it doesn't have the bloom in the sound, like the HD650s or more obvious the NightHawks. More airy than the HD650s. The bass does go a bit lower, but not much.Slightly less upfront and intimate. ![]()
